Borderers v Five Arches

Five ArchesFIVE ARCHES 95  V  BORDERERS 60

The Arches travelled to Whitland Borderers last week to play their last group game in this season’s Brains Cup competition. After their win against St. Issells in their previous game, the Arches knew this was a must-win game, if they were to progress to the final, which will be played at Pendine on Sunday, July 21. The Arches produced a superb team performance against a strong Borderers team, winning on three rinks to see themselves home and dry by 95 shots to 60. On rink one, Gerald and his men made a fantastic start to their game. With Ron and Jim laying the foundation, Peter and Gerald were able to add to the shot count and at the 10th end they were leading by 15 shots to one. From then on they cruised to victory by 28 shots to eight.

On the captain’s rink it was a different story, though as Ashley, Tony, Jonno and Joe found it hard going against John Addison and his men, eventually going down by eight shots. On rink three, Ray and his crew of John, Steve and Clive produced the biggest miracle since Moses parted the Red Sea. After 15 ends they had only managed to score on five of them and were losing by 21 shots to five. On the 16th end they picked up three shots and from then on it was all one-way traffic as they piled in 22 shots over the last six ends to run out 27-21 victors. Well done the cubs. With regular skip Dai Spencer unable to play due to work commitments, Ken stepped in to skip on rink four, with Luke Rees stepping in at third and Harold and Mike up front. They made the perfect start, picking up six shots on the first end, and from then on they were in complete control, running out winners by 26 shots to nine.

Rink scores (Arches first, Borderers skips only):

Ron Hurlow, Jim Taylor, Peter Hooper, Gerald Hewitt 28; Selwyn Price 8.
Joe Hewitt, Jonathan Hubbard, Tony Powling, Ashley Hooper 14; John Addison 22.
John Rees, Steve Davies, Clive Webb, Ray Taylor 27; James Jenner 21
Mike Gouldingay, Harold Ebdon, Luke Rees, Ken Lloyd 26; Dave Lewis 9.
