Saundersfoot v Five Arches

Five ArchesSaundersfoot 87 (10pts) Five Arches 75 (4pts)
11th June 2016

With Captain Ashley absent in the Pembroke Dock open, Vice-Captain Dai stepped up, hoping for an improved performance from the Five Arches boys after a disappointing previous two games. Webby and his rink of Ken, Bill and Steve started well, all square after 6, but a run of 15 shots with no reply from the Saundersfoot rink built up a lead which couldn't be caught and they ran out winners by 27 shots to 13.

Gerald, supported by John, Mike and Neil again had a steady start, and lead by 1 shot on the 14th end, however a disastrous drop of 6 shots enabled the Saundersfoot foursome to open up a gap and run out winners by 20 shots to 13.  Captain Dai, with Viv, Kev and David were never in trouble, leading by 7 shots at tea they carried on in a similar vein to win by 25 shots to 19. Finally on rink 5, Ben and his rink of Roger, Bill and Tony had a similar game, leading by 3 shots at tea, they again played well in the second half to win by 24 shots to 21. A great performance against one of the stronger side in the division. Next game a double header away against  Pendine on Saturday and Fishguard on Sunday.

Five Arches v Haverfordwest

Five ArchesFive Arches 61 (0pts) Haverfordwest 110 (14pts)
4th June 2016

After the previous week disappointing performance against Milford, we were hoping for a confidence boosting performance against Haverfordwest. However this was not to be, we were comprehensively beaten on all four rinks. First up on rink 1 , in front of the pavilion, Gerald and his rink of John, Mike and Neil were in a tight match for the first six or seven ends but gradually the Haverfordwest rink began to pull away. They lead by 5 shots after 10 ends, 8 after 15 and finally ran out winners by 31 shots to 15.

Next up on rink 2, Simon , supported by late substitutes Dave and Tony and Ben had a slow start but battled back to be level after 10 ends. However the wheels fell off in the second half , scoring only 3 but conceding 22 shots, they lost by 31 shots to 13. Captain Ashley and his rink of Viv, Steve and Dai were never quite in touch with the Hafod rink, trailing by 4 shots at tea , they never got any closer and finally succumbed by 23 shots to 15. Finally on rink 4, Webby with Ken, Johno and Beano fought back from a slow start to be leading by 1 shot on the 13th end. However a couple of poor ends enabled the Haverfordwest rink to ease ahead and win by 25 shots to 19. Overall a disappointing performance against a strong Haverfordwest team. Special mention must go to (very) late substitutes Dave and Tony for stepping in and helping the team out. Next up away to Saundersfoot.

Milford v Five Arches

Five ArchesMilford Haven 89 (12pts)  Five Arches 61 (2pts)
28th May 2016

After a three week gap, the Five Arches team travelled to Milford for their second match in the Pembrokeshire League Division 1. After winning in the previous game against Pembroke Dock, hopes were high that this run would continue however the team were brought back down to Earth by some fine play by the Milford team. Rink one saw Five Arches new recruits Jon Webb and Beano paired with Jon Hubbard and Ken Lloyd. They were drawn against a strong Milford rink skipped by Dave Buchanan.  The Milford rink made the early running and were leading by 9 shots to 2 after 7 ends, the Five Arches rink then fought back to be within 1 shot after 14 ends, however a strong finish by the home team let them ease to a 21 shots 14 victory.

Ashley’s rink of Viv, Dai and James started well, 8 shots to 4 up after 6 ends however a run of 13 unanswered shots for the Milford rink soon put paid to that early lead. The Five Arches rink dug in and fought back to get within 3 shots by the 17th end , however once again a strong finish by the Milford quartet ensured a comfortable win by 26 shots to 15. Simon and his rink of Roger, Ben and Steve trailed by only 4 shots at tea but again the Milford rink had a good second half to run out comfortable winners by 24 shots to 13. Finally on rink 4 , Gerald's rink of John, Mike and Neil provided some resistance, two shots ahead at tea, they finally edged a one shot victory after a closely fought second half. Overall a disappointing performance but many congratulations to a good Milford team. Next up home to Haverfordwest.

Pembroke Dock v Five Arches

Five ArchesPembroke Dock 78 (2pts) Five Arches 92 (12pts)
30th April 2016

The start of a new season and no better place to be than Pembroke Dock in the sunshine. Last season Pembroke Dock won a closely fought match by seven shots and the Five Arches were looking forward to going one better this year. Five Arches new boys , Webby and Beano ably assisted by Five Arches veterans Ken and Johnno had a tough game against Pembroke Dock Captain Richard Jones and his rink. Evenly matched after 6 ends, the Pembroke Dock rink then exploded into action picking up 10 shots in 3 ends to lead 15 shots to 3. A fightback got the Arches to within 8 shots but the Dock boys edged the remaining ends to run out winners by 26 shots to 12. Simon and his rink of Roger, TP and Steve carried on where they left off in their previous match cruising to another comfortable win. Leading by  8 shots to nil after 3 ends, they stretched this out to 22 shots to 11 after 15 ends and eased to 27 shots to 16 victory.

Ashley and his rink of Dai, Dave and debutant Viv had a ding dong battle against Brian Dowling's quartet. Leading by 11 shots to 3 after 9 ends, they dozed off after the tea interval to be 19 shots to 15 behind after 16 ends. However a fine finish  led to a narrow 24 shots to 21 win. On rink 4, we welcomed back Gerald, who together with his rink of John, Kev and Neil produced a commanding performance. They led by 14 shots to 3 after 6 ends including two counts of 5 shots, picking up two further counts of 4 increased their lead to 27 shots to 10 after 15 ends and comfortably ran out winners by 29 shots to 15 at the end of the match. A great start to the Five Arches season, picking up 12 points away from home. The Carruthers qualifying matches now occupy the next three weeks of the season, with the next Five Arches game , away to Milford on the 28th May.
