Five Arches 75 Pendine 43
10th April 2016
On a very cold and windy day, the Five Arches welcomed Pendine Bowling Club to Tenby for a very early pre-season friendly. Perhaps it was a bit too early in the season but both teams endured and played 15 ends in a friendly but competitive manner. Simon and his rink of Mike, TP and Peter effortlessly won on rink one. After a fairly even start, the Five Arches rink picked up 6 shots on the 7th end and another count of 5 on the 11th end to run out comfortable winners by 20 shots to 9. A welcome return to Gerald in Five Arches colours who skipped John, Ben and Steve to another win, never behind throughout the match, they won by 18 shots to 6. New recruit Huw " Beano" Nicholas had a interesting start to his Five Arches career. 13 shots to nil down after 5 ends, however ably assisted by Kev, Johnno and Cameron they fought back well to be only 7 behind when the game finished after 15 ends. Captain Ashley and his rink of Viv, David and Dai were always in control on rink 4 , a run of scoring on 8 consecutive ends allowed them to run out easy winners by 27 shots to 11. A good start, hopefully putting the Five Arches in good stead for the forthcoming season.

Fishguard & Goodwick 80 Five Arches 86 (Five Arches 11 pts Fishguard 3)
15th August 2015
The Five Arches travelled to Fishguard hoping to get back to winning ways after two defeats. Fishguard are fighting in a relegation battle at the bottom of the league so a tough game was on the cards. Captain Ben and his rink of Kev, Tony and Turbo were first up on rink 2. A closely fought game all the way with the Five Arches boys all playing well however Fishguard skip Tony was playing superbly denying the Five Arches quartet any chance to pull away. At 10 ends the score was 10 shots to 7 for the Arches and after another close fought 11 ends , the game ended as 16 shots apiece draw. On rink 3 , Ashley and his rink of Bill, David and Ken were up against Fishguard stalwart Davo Hughes. After a bright start, 7 shots to 0 up after 3 ends, the Arches rink only had a slender of lead of 4 shots at the halfway stage. However a big surge in the second half saw them run out comfortable winners by 26 shots to 13. Rink 4, saw Ben and his usual table topping rink of John, Jonno and Steve involved in a dramatic game. They were trailing throughout the game, 9 shots to 1 after 5 ends, 16 shots to 11 after 10 and 23 shots to 16 after 15. However after picking up their third five of the afternoon on the 18th end, they drew level and finally edged the game by 28 shots to 24. Neil and his rink of Harold, Mike and Jimmy battled out on rink 5, trailing by 7 shots at tea, they fought back to be within 4 on the 18th end but a late flourish by the Fishguard foursome allowed them to increase their lead to 27 shots to 16 . A great victory away from home, the Five Arches now have 99 points with one game to go. Next up , Pembrokeshire league champions for the 8th successive year Tenby, on Saturday 29th August.

Five Arches 66 Whitland 104 (Five Arches 2 pts Whitland 12)
25th July 2015
After Tuesday's fantastic win away to Haverfordwest, hopes were high for another good result for the Five Arches. However we were soon brought back down to earth by a strong Whitland team. On rink 1, Ashley and his rink of Dai, David and Ken played a tight game against Steve Reese up until the 14th end , afterwards the Whitland foursome went into overdrive scoring 17 shots in the remaining 7 ends to run out comfortable winners by 31 shots to 14. Rink 2 saw Ben and his rink of John, Jon and Steve play well again. They stormed off to lead by 20 shots to 2 at 10 ends and fought off a great comeback by Dan Jenner and his rink to win by 24 shots to 18. Captain Ben and his rink of Roger, Tony and the returning John Cully were involved in a tight game on rink 4. Leading by 9 shots to 7 at tea, the game edged back and forth with the Whitland rink eventually clinching the game by 22 shots to 17. Finally on rink 5, Simon with Mike, Kevin and Neil had a day to forget, trailing by 12 shots to 7 after 10 ends, the Whitland rink steeped up a gear in the second half to win by 33 shots to 11. Five Arches 69 Pendine 96 ( Five Arches 4pts Pendine 10)
8th August 2015
In the blazing August sun, the Five Arches were hoping to get back to winning ways after last week's defeat to Whitland. First up, in front of the crowd on rink 1 , were Ben and his rink of John , Jon and Steve who continued their fine run of form this year. Starting slowly, at one stage 13 shots to 2 down, they played better and better as the game progressed. They picked up 13 shots through ends 14 to 18 to take command and ran out winners by 27 shots to 13. Next door on rink 2, Neil and his rink of Peter, Jimmy and Mike played a much more patient game , edging ahead by 4 shots at tea , they scored a well-timed 5 on the 18th end to open up a gap on the Pendine rink and eventually won by 21 shots to 15. Unfortunately for the Five Arches, the further away from the clubhouse , the worse we played. Captain Ben and his rink of Roger, Tony and Kevin struggled in the latter stages on rink 3. Trailing by only 4 at tea, they fell away in the second half and succumbed by 32 shots to 9. Out on rink 4, Ashley and his rink of Tom, David and Dai had a similar experience, only scoring on 6 of the 21 ends to lose by 29 shots to 12. A disappointing result for the Arches but we continue to have a fine season. Next up, away to Fishguard on Saturday.

Haverfordwest 74 Five Arches 85 ( Five Arches 12 pts Haverfordwest 2)
21st July 2015
Unusually for the Five Arches we travelled to play Haverfordwest on a Tuesday evening. Not expecting a great deal against one of the best sides in the Pembrokeshire league, we were in for a big surprise. On rink 2, Simon, Mike, Peter and Neil were involved in a tight, high quality game. Leading by 9 shots to 4 after 10 ends , they endured a Haverfordwest fightback to lead 15 shots to 13 after 20 ends. With Phil John's men holding a very close 2 shots , a draw look likely however Simon played a superb final bowl to drop only one and win the game by 15 shots to 14. A fine performance by all four members of the rink. On the next rink, Ashley, Dai, Ken and David had a much more comfortable evening. After a slow start , they lead by 14 shots to 8 at 10 ends and consolidated in the second half to win by 23 shots to 16. Captain Ben, with Roger, Kevin and Tony were up against county team manager PDS Jenkins and his rink. They trailed by 13 shots to 9 at 10 ends but fought their way back into the game to lead by 5 after 17 ends , however the Haverfordwest quartet fought back themselves to lead by 4 going into the final end. A brilliant final bowl by Ben to remove the Haverfordwest shot bowl looked to have won the game for his rink but after some close measuring , Ben and his rink picked up 3 shots to lose by 24 shots to 23. Finally on rink 5, Ben Simmons together with John, Johno and Steve dominated their game but could not quite pull away from Richard O'Leary's men. Leading by 15 shots to 7 at 10 ends, the lead was down to 1 by the 17th end, however some composed bowling over the last 4 ends enabled them to emerge victorious by 24 shots to 20. A great win for the Five Arches, next up Whitland at home.
