County bowls finals writes Ceris Hewlings...

A large crowd of supporters enjoyed a high standard of bowling at the annual Pembroke County Bowling Association finals on Saturday. Hosted by Whitland Bowling Club, home club of association president Colin Wynn, a total of 12 games were played throughout the day, which even saw the sun make a welcome appearance! Peter Day, of Tenby, won the blue riband singles event, a feat he previously achieved in 2010, beating the holder Craig Jones, of Haverfordwest. Staring defeat in the face, a last bowl of the match super bowl by Chris Court, of Haverfordwest, saw he and partner Ryan Thomas clinch the pairs title over Jon Webb and Pat Currie, of Tenby, in an extra end thriller, while John Roberts, also of Tenby, now has his name on every open county competition trophy after winning the triples with Mike Jackson and last year’s president John Baggott.

Tenby’s Paul Diment lifted the rinks trophy for an amazing eighth time - this time with Peter Day and twins Luke and Craig Guymer, while new names on the prize-winners list included their teenage clubmates Ben Cloake, who lifted the Under 18s cup, and Aaron Lloyd, who won both the U25s and U35s trophies. In the Over 60s competitions, Mal Evans, of Pendine, successfully defended his title, the pairs went to Brian McKehon and Stuart Howe, of Saundersfoot, who defeated the holders John Baggott and Pat Currie, while the rinks stays in Pembroke Dock with 2011 winners Tudor Harries, Brian Dowling, Ken Edwards and Richard Jones. At the fourth time of asking, Ysie White was finally successful in the mixed pairs final. This year with Jon Webb, they defeated the host club’s mother and son duo, Kathy and Dan Jenner, previous winners in 2009.

With the exception of the Under 35 singles and mixed pairs, all winners will now represent Pembrokeshire during the national finals week in Llandrindod Wells in August.

Open singles: P. Day (Tenby) beat C. Jones (H’west) 21-18.

Under 18 singles: B. Cloake (Tenby) beat J. Dennis (Saundersfoot) 21-20.

Under 25 singles: A. Lloyd (Tenby) beat R. Thomas (Haverfordwest) 21-17.

Under 35 singles: A. Lloyd (Tenby) beat G. Barrett (Milford Haven) 21-6.

Open pairs: C. Court and R. Thomas (Haverfordwest) beat J. Webb and P. Currie (Tenby) 17-16 after an extra end.

Open triples: J. Baggott, M. Jackson and J. Roberts (Tenby) beat  B., M. and J. Dennis (Saundersfoot) 16-7.

Open rinks: P. Diment, C. Guymer, L. Guymer and P. Day (Tenby) beat C. Jones, C. Court, R. Thomas and J. Dixon (Haverfordwest) 17-11.

Over 60 singles: M. Evans (Pendine) beat G. Hughes (Saundersfoot) 21-13.

Over 60 pairs: B. McKehon and S. Howe (Saundersfoot) beat J. Baggott and P. Currie (Tenby) 20-15.

Over 60 rinks: T. Harries, B. Dowling, K. Edwards, R. Jones (Pembroke Dock) beat S. King-Thomas, D. King-Thomas, M. Dix and M. Evans (Pendine) 23-17.

Mixed pairs: Y. White and J. Webb (Tenby) beat K. and D. Jenner (Whitland) 28-20.
