Five Arches v Haverforwest

Five ArchesHaverfordwest 87 (12 pts) Five Arches 67 (2pts)

23rd April 2017

Another season begins, first up home to Haverfordwest, last year’s runners up in the league. On a sunny afternoon we welcomed two debutants to the Five Arches ranks. Peter (Inch) Thomas and Ritchie Hyland. After the usual problems with parking , Neil and his rink of John, Bill and Steve kicked off the new season on rink 1 in front of the adoring crowd. An impressive start gave them a 9 shots to 2 lead after 8 ends, unfortunately the wheels came off, dropping 11 shots in the next 3 ends saw them fall behind. After a fightback to get within 2 shots, Gareth and his Haverfordwest rink finished strongly to win by 7 shots, 22 to 15.  Webbie once gain teamed up with Beano on rink 2, assisted by new boy Ritchie and veteran Five Arches player Tony , they struggled initially , trailing by 14 shots to 4 after 11 ends. Picking up 5 shots in the next 3 ends brought them right back into the game, unfortunately this was the highpoint , the Haverfordwest rink then pulled away to win by 25 shots to 14. Captain Ashley and his rink of James, Inch and Mike had a ding dong battle against ex Tenby player Alan Whitehouse. Level at 10 ends , 15 ends and 20 ends. It all came down to a last end shoot out with Alan, no doubt still angry about his parking ticket, playing a brilliant bowl to secure a 19 shots to 16 win. Finally our dream rink out on rink 4 were involved in another exceptionally close game. Simon aided and abetted by Viv, Dave and Dai started strongly and led by 7 shots to 1 after 4 ends. They were reeled in to be level after 8 ends and then pulled away strongly to lead by 17 shots to 9 after 14. Two moments of madness led them to drop 10 shots in 2 ends which saw them fall behind but a very strong finish including a superb drawing bowl from Simon with the last wood of the game let them snatch a one shot win by 22 shots to 21. Not a bad performance against a strong Haverfordwest team. Hopefully we can improve from this and go on and win the next game. Next up , home to Pembroke Dock on Saturday 29th April.

Tenby v Five Arches

Giltar HotelTENBY 126 (14 pts)  FIVE ARCHES 61 (0)
27th August 2016

The Tenby team kept on course for a ninth successive Pembrokeshire League title with a comprehensive victory over the Five Arches in last Saturday’s ‘local derby’ clash. But they did not have things all their own way on the immaculate Sutton Street, specially cut for the occasion only minutes before the eagerly-awaited action began. In fact, at the halfway stage, the Arches were holding on to a narrow three-shot lead, with two rinks up and two down.

Their captain Ashley Hooper was leading by example as he played some impressive bowls against the Ryan Thomas skipped rink, while alongside, Jonathan Webb had his nose in front against Keiron Peregrine in a keenly contested tussle.Simon Evans and his men were also giving as good as they got against Paul Diment’s crew and at one stage were locked together at 7-7, while Neil Dickinson and his rink were not far behind against the talented Guymer twins, who were aided and abetted up front by stalwart Dai Rees and current county singles champion Mike Jackson, who was in excellent form.

After tea, though, the wheels began to come off the Arches’ gallant challenge. As so often has happened in the past, the Tenby side seemed to find another gear and moved into overdrive in the second half to completely run away with the game, winning on all four rinks and by over 60 shots - quite a turnaround! Jonathan Webb eventually went down by eight, to be the Arches’ top rink, while Neil Dickinson and his lads were not far behind as they went down by 10. As for the other two Arches rinks, well perhaps the least said the better, but suffice to say the remainder of the 65-shot deficit was sort of shared between them, although we are not sure of the exact scores. Although Tenby remain in second place in the league after their victory, they are only five points behind with a game in hand on current leaders Haverfordwest, who have finished their matches. Tenby’s final game, a rearranged fixture, is at home to Pendine on September 24, when they will need six points to again clinch the title.

Five Arches v Fishguard

13th August 2016

Buoyed by this success against Saundersfoot, the Arches were in confident mood when Fishguard and Goodwick were visitors to the Sutton Street green the following Saturday afternoon. Again a close contest ensued. In fact, midway through, the scores were level with the scoreboards looking like a mirror image of each other, two rinks being up 10-4 and the other two down 10-4.

The Arches again produced a strong second half, though, and eventually eased to a 16-shot victory (90-74), earning themselves 11 points, with two rinks successful, one going down narrowly and the other sneaking a draw. They finish their league campaign next Saturday when they play away to Tenby and, as things stand, it looks as if much could rest on the outcome of the derby clash.

Five Arches v Saundersfoot

BOUNCE BACK

After the disappointment of an 86-80 home defeat to Pendine the previous week, the Five Arches team bounced back with two fine victories in four days last week. The first came on Wednesday evening when they entertained near neighbors Saundersfoot, who had run Tenby close the previous Saturday. A tough encounter was expected against the villagers, and so it proved. In fact, for much of the game, the Arches appeared to be heading for another defeat as Saundersfoot started to forge ahead.

But gradually they began to pull it back and as darkness closed in, the match reached a nail-biting climax, with the scores tied across the board, with just one rink still on and two ends remaining. With the jack in the ditch, the Arches nosed ahead as they drew one closest to the edge on the penultimate end, but Saundersfoot looked in command as they themselves held a couple of shots to lie match on the final end.

Only the skips were now left to bowl and much to the relief (or was it amazement?) of home supporters on the balcony, two inch-perfect woods in the gathering gloom saw the Arches turn things on their head to snatch a dramatic 75 shots to 72 victory and bag 10 league points, with two rinks up and two down.

Five Arches v Pendine

Five ArchesFive Arches 80 (4pts) Pendine 86 (10pts)
6th August 2016

On rink 1 , Neil and his rink of John, Mike and Turbo had the worst possible start, after scoring 1 on the first end, they conceded 16 shots in the next 6 ends and trailed by 17 shots to 4 at the tea interval. Unfortunately the 2nd half was as bad as the first and they finished losing by 29 shots to 13. Ashley, greatly helped by Dai, Jon and Viv were involved in a much tighter game, leading 10 shots to 7 at tea, they edged further ahead to finally win by 22 shots to 14.

Beano steeped up to skip again on rink 4, ably supported by Roger, TP and Steve, they edged the first half to lead 13 shots to 8. However some fine play by the Pendine quartet allowed them to dominate the next 11 ends to stroll to a 29 shots to 18 victory. Finally on rink 5, the result everyone has been waiting for. Webby together with Ken, Kev and James  had a slow start, 8 nil down after 4 ends but they recovered to be only 2 shots behind at tea and the second half was a complete reversal, only losing 3 ends, Webby and his gang scored 18 shots and ran out winners by 27 shots to 14. Many congratulations Team Webby. Disappointing to lose at home but good to be involved in such a tight game.
