Castle v Tenby

Haverfordwest Castle 70 (0) Tenby 89 (14 pts)

Chandler RogersJointly sponsored by Layton and Company Solicitors and Chandler Rogers Estate Agents, the Tenby team travelled to Haverfordwest for another Pembrokeshire League Division One match. Uncharacteristically, the team were slow to start and led by only three shots at five ends. At 10 ends, Tenby held a slender one shot lead, before they took control of the match by the 15th end to lead by 16.

The lead decreased to 13 shots at 18 ends and finished with a winning margin of 19 shots, but more importantly a maximum 14 points. Peter Day’s rink of Cameron White, Mike Jackson and John Baggott were always in control against a strong Haverfordwest ‘skip’ in Barry Absalom and won by 24 shots to 17. Craig Guymer’s rink had an interesting game, to say the least, with multiple counts being gained and lost. In fact, at five ends there had been one count of four shots to the Tenby team, but the other four ends had seen a 3, 1, 4, 3 reversal and so they were behind 4-11.

Between ends six and 15, it seemed that order was restored and they restricted their opponents to single shots. A five on the 14th end saw the Tenby four lead 16-14. They exchanged single shots with their opponents and then, on the 17th end, a further dropped count of four shots to see them behind again, 17-19. Once again the sides exchanged single shots, until on the last end the Tenby foursome made five shots to win 24-20. What a game! Pat Currie’s rink was never in trouble in this match and, although the Haverfordwest four did make a spirited effort to win the rink, the Tenby four won by 18 shots to 15. Andrew Muskett’s match against David Summers was very similar to Craig Guymer’s in scoring patterns. At five ends all appeared in order as Andrew’s rink steadily went into a 4-2 lead.

The opposition rallied with a scoring sequence of 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, before Andrew took a four, but then dropped a threeshot count and then a single. At 14 ends, the Haverfordwest rink led 10-15, but the Tenby four took a six, followed by a two and a three, to move ahead of their opponents and at the close won by five shots. Once again, a very solid performance by the Tenby team, who picked up the vital 14 points to help them in their quest to retain the Pembrokeshire League.

Rink scores were as follows:
C. White, M. Jackson, J. Baggott, P. Day 24-17.
J. Richards, D. Spencer, J. Roberts, A. Muskett 23-18.
N. Dickinson, D. Silcox, J. Webb, P. Currie 18-15.
L. Rees, G. Hewitt, S. Williams, C. Guymer 24-20.
