24 June 2014

Tenby Arches ladies travelled to Pembroke Dock last Thursday to play the league leaders on their own green and what a game this turned out to be! With the match played in glorious sunshine, no one could have predicted the winner at 18 ends, but it was the Arches ladies who eventually lost by 36 shots to 29, with Pembroke Dock collecting all six league points.  At 11 ends, the Tenby Arches ladies were up overall by 21 shots to 12, but last year's champions fought back well in the second half. Alison, sporting her Aussie hat, had great support from Margaret, Meryl (with a damp towel covering her head) and Helen, and they found them-selves level at 17 ends. However, the Pembroke Dock rink, skipped by Diana Davis, finished the stronger, picking up seven shots to two, so securing an l8 shots to 13 vic-tory. Gerry's rink of Liz, Ginnie and Audrey were all playing well and Found themselves ahead by six shots at tea. The Pembroke Dock rink fought back, winning five consecutive ends to get back to 16-all at 19 ends. On the last end, the Arches ladies were holding five shots, but with victory in sight, a match-winning bowl was delivered by Pembroke Dock skip Betty James to snatch a win by 18 shots to 16. The Arches ladies left Pembroke Dock disappointed. having played so well throughout, only to have lost on both rinks in the last few ends.

19 June 2014

With three ends remaining in this game, it was looking very probable that the Tenby Arches Ladies would be returning home with no points to show for their afternoon spent under the sun at Pembroke Dock, but there was to be a twist in the tail! Julia's rink of Liz, Ginnie and Lon had a difficult and somewhat unlucky afternoon losing to Margaret Lewis, the Park skip, by 24 shots to 15. The nine-shot difference did not represent how close the game was at times. Alison with Margaret. Meryl and Helen also struggled at times and were in trouble going into the 19th end, three shots down against the Park rink skipped by Penny Brickle, The Arches ladies fought back to pick up a match-winning five shots and then on the penultimate end added a further two to win by18 shots to 15. From staring defeat in the face, Alison and her team conjured up a winning rink and two valuable points to take back to Tenby. The final overall shots score was Pembroke Dock Park 39 Tenby Ladies 33.

Tenby v Melyn United

Tenby Bowling Club recently welcomed Melyn United to t heir Sutton Street green for a friendly match (writes club captain Peter Hooper)  Hailing from the Neath area, they were on a day trip to Tenby as part of their centenary ( 100 years) celebrations. How smart they looked wearing their greys and blazers and special centenary ties . This was a tough fixture for Tenby as seven mixed rinks were required and, due to other bowling commitments around the county. we were short on numbers. so we invited three players to guest for us, two from Pendine and one from Saundersfoot - many thanks from Tenby Club for your support.

The game was played in wonderful sunshine and very high spirits. After 10 ends, the score in Tenby’s favour stood at 77 shots to 54. Fifty-six players then made their way into the pavilion for customary refreshments of tea and biscuits and a special treat- cake, yum. yum. Despite the confusion of so many players descending upon our tea ladies all at once, they did a wonderful job of looking after us – no pressure girls. Many thanks to you all (we would be lost without you).  Back onto the green for the final 11 ends, which l think took longer than the first half, probably due to the heat of the sunshine taking its toll... or. More likely, too much cake being eaten at tea-break! A wonderful afternoon  was enjoyed by everyone on the green, as was the social gathering in the lounge bar afterwards (and for those who were there, you will no doubt be relieved to hear that the Melyn captain has found his glasses!). You might also be interested to know that. as well as it being a special occasion for the centenary celebrating Melyn United team , it was also a very special day for Tenby Bowling Club, as it is believed a little piece of history was made on the day.

As club captain, l was very honoured to have at number two in my rink, the youngest member to play in a Tenby club game, namely nine-year-old Katie Dickinson. Katie played the full 23 ends (including trial ends) and her enthusiasm, dedication and keenness never faltered throughout. Many congratulations on your performance. Bowlers, watch this space -as in Katie Dickinson, a star is born!

11 June 2014

Tenby Arches ladies travelled to Neyland last Wednesday hoping to put behind them the poor results sequence of previous games. Having secured maximum points in their home fixture with Neyland,  the Arches ladies were anxious to emulate this score on the green of the current president of West Wales Ladies Bowling Association, Margaret Sanders. Just a few ends into the game, it became obvious that the Arches ladies were enjoying the green and with confidence high and enthusiastic encouragement coming from all, they got to the halfway stage leading by 31 shots to 14. Helping skip Helen along were Margaret, who was having a game to remember, and with Meryl and Gerry joining in the action, they found themselves 10 shots ahead at tea.with one count of five on the card. It was more of the same in the second half, with Helen's impressive ladies running out winners by 27 shots to 14 against Janet Sutton and her quartet.
Skipping the second Arches rink was Alison, who was supported by ladies captain Carol, Ginnie and stalwart Mair, who continues to roll back the years. Allison's ladies were always in command of their game against Val Hubbard's rink. With the 'Beekenbomber’ in full flow, wicking off numerous woods during the game, they ran out comfortable winners by 21 shots to12. This was one of the best performances of the season from the Arches ladies, who headed back over the Cleddau with a 48 shots to 26 victory and maximum points on the cards.
