Tenby Arches Ladies v Picton

Tenby BadgeTenby Arches Ladies 4pts. Picton Ladies 2

 24 May 2014

Tenby Arches ladies played host to Haverfordwest Picton last Saturday on a day not contusive to playing bowls. Rain fell throughout, making it difficult for both sides. But it was the Arches ladies who triumphed by the narrowest of margins winning by 35 shots to 34 in a low scoring match.  Julia’s rink of Carol, Mair and Gerry were evenly matched against their Haverfordwest counterparts with the lead changing hands several times. On the last end, Tenby needed two shots to win and looked to have secured it with woods around the jack. Haverfordwest conceded just the one shot and despite Gerry measuring several woods had to admit defeat losing by 16 shots to 17. Alison and her team of Ginnie, Lon and Helen also had a tight game and with two ends to go
were four shots down. With defeat not an option, Alison’s ladies fought back to get three shots on each of the last two ends to win by 19 shots to 17. This was a hard won four points in poor bowling conditions, The Arches Ladies were well supported throughout by Audrey in her white waterproofs and sunglasses, ever the optimistic! Our missing teapot lady also turned up ready to play, but was not needed.

Tenby Arches Ladies v Neyland

Tenby Arches Ladies 6 pts. Neyland Ladies 0

21 May 2014

It was important for Tenby ladies to get back to winning ways against Neyland ladies following their last game defeat against Whitland. With the previous day’s game postponed due to heavy rain the ladies took to the green last Wednesday in near perfect conditions.
Julia’s rink of Liz, Ginnie and Gerry were always in control with Liz, back from her short break in good form at lead With one count of five and three threes. Julia’s rink won by 29 shots to 14 and winning 15 of the 21 ends in the process. Alison’s rink of Audrey, Carol and Helen had a much tougher game on their hands. Neyland ladies had a one-shot advantage, with the lead having changed hands several times up to this point. The 17th end turned the game in Tenby’s favour picking up six shots with everyone contributing. The Arches ladies were now in the lead and held on to win by 20 shots to 17. This was a good performance by the Arches ladles winning overall by 49 shots to 31.

Fishguard v Tenby

24 May 2014

The ND Toy & Partners, TP Hughes, and Welsh Gift Shop sponsored Tenby club continued their aim to qualify for the knock out stages of the Welsh Bowling Association Carruthers Shield Championship knowing that a win against Fishguard would secure that passage. The Sharks started well and maintained the intensity across all the rinks to record a record win at Fishguard. So, after playing their three qualifying games, winning all three, the Tenby team qualified for the later stages of the competition.

Having appeared in four out of the last five semi-finals, the Tenby club has arguably the best ever squad of players in their history. Tomorrow the club returns to League Division One action against Milford Haven (away) and will recommence the Carruthers Shield against a Cardiff club - yet to be known - on June 21.

Five Arches v Pendine

Five Arches 4pts. Pendine 10pts.

11th May 2014

Last Saturday saw league action return to Sutton Street when the TP Hughes – Welsh Gift Shop sponsored Five Arches team entertained Pendine Bowling Club in a First Division League game. On a miserable wet afternoon, the Arches suffered their first league defeat of the season, going down by 74 shots to 61, the Arches picking up four points to Pendine’s 10 points. Rink one saw the welcome return to the Arches of Neil Dickinson, for many years a regular in the Tenby team.. Neil slotted into Gerald’s rink as third, and took to the role like a duck to water. Gerald’s rink maintained their top form with John, Steve, Neil and Gerald running out winners by 20 shots to 12 against Stewart King Thomas and his rink.

Rink two saw the Captain’s rink, skipped by Ashley, struggle all afternoon due to Johno and Tony unable to cope with the wet conditions, leaving Steve and Ashley to keep them in the game, with Steve in in particular in cracking form taking Pendine bowls on numerous occasions, the points however going to Arwel Edwards and his men who found the conditions very much to their liking, running out winners by 21 shots to 16. Rink three saw Dai and his crew playing against Mal Evans and his men. Dai, Ken, Ben and Jim were always playing catch up as the Pendine rink raced into a 13-shot lead by the seventh end. With Jim coming in as a late replacement, he also struggled with the conditions on the long jacks. The game finally finished with Pendine winning 27 shots to 10.

On rink four, Tiger and his cubs were again involved in another tight game, running out winners by 15 shots to 14, against former Five Arches captain Dai King Thomas and his rink. With Harold Ebdon and Steve Sheldon upfront both playing well, Ray and Peter steered the rink to a one shot win, once again well done the cubs.

Rink scores, Pendine skips only.

Pembroke Dock v Tenby

ND Toy & PartnersPembroke Dock v Tenby

10 May 2014

The N. D. Toy & Partners Ltd, T. P. Hughes and Welsh Gift Shop sponsored, Tenby Club began their quest to regain the Welsh Club Championship against Pembroke Dock. The weather proved to be difficult for both sides, especially the effect the wind was having. The match was level at five ends, 17-all. Tenby held a slight advantage over 10 ends, leading 37 to 34. In a similar vein to the previous week’s game against Saundersfoot, the Tenby club found another gear and scored 24 shots to the hosts seven to lead by 20 shots at the 15-end mark. At 18 ends, the Tenby club scored a huge 30 shots, whilst only conceding two, to hold a more than healthy advantage. The end score, at 21 ends, was a 53-shot victory (105-52) Rink one: The Kieran Peregrine ‘rink’ only won one of the first seven ends, but that scoring end was a count of six shots which meant they only trailed by two shots. At 14 ends, the Pembroke Dock ‘four’ led by one shot (14-13). A surge by the Tenby four resulted in them winning all remaining ends, scoring 14 shots in the process to win 28-14. Rink two: Alan Whitehouse recorded his first win as a Tenby skip, beating Richard Jones 21-16. The Tenby rink showed tremendous tenacity to win this game, having been 11-4 down at eight ends. A winning scoring sequence of seven ends, picking up eight shots, saw them edge in front by one. The rink then applied great team management, winning four out of the remaining six ends and picking up nine shots to two.

Rink three: John Roberts and Aaron Lloyd returned to the Tenby line-up, replacing Paul Diment and Ben Sheldon. Aaron Lloyd produced a scintillating display and proved what a natural sporting talent he is - especially considering that this was his first game of the season. International John Roberts was always in control against Pembroke Dock’s Richard Hissey, but a dogged display by the hosts saw them trail by only four shots at 10 ends (8-12). However, like all the rinks around them, the Tenby four scored on nine out of the remaining 11 ends, picking up 15 shots to four, to win at the close by 27 shots to 12. Rink four: The Andrew Muskett four, like the John Roberts rink, were in total control against the David Buchannan four, winning 14 out of the 21 ends. Holding a slender lead of 12-8 at 13 ends, the Tenby four powered their way to the finish line, scoring 17 shots to two.
