Tenby Arches Ladies v St Issellls

Fourcroft HotelTenby Arches Ladies 4pts. St Issells 2pts.
23 April 2014

Tenby Arches Ladies started their long league season with a home game against local rivals St Issells. Tenby Ladies Captain Carol welcomed the visitors with the news that they would have to play the game with a lady short due to other commitments from the small Tenby squad. St Issells also had the same problem , so the match started with a player each short. Tenby Skip, Helen Baggott and her team were drawn on the outside rink, with the game very evenly matched up to the 16th end. By the end of 18th end, St Issells had edged into a 5 shot lead. Helen, Gerry and Meryl fought back well to hold three shots for the game until St Issells  skip , Beryl Lewis, with her last wood drew the shot to win the rink for the visitors. On rink five, Julia King Thomas had a similar start to that of Helen, with the score tied at eight-all at 11 ends. Julia's rink of Carol, Lon and Liz then found some excellent form, with everyone contributing shots, and eased to a 13-shot win. Tenby Captain, Carol Lloyd, would like to extend a welcome to any local ladies to come along and see how thegame is played with a view to taking up the game of bowls.

Five Arches v Haverfordwest Castle

Five ArchesFive Arches 79 (12 pts.) Haverfordwest Castle 74 (2pts)

26th April 2014

The TP Hughes and Welsh Gift Shop sponsored Five Arches team were in action last Saturday against Haverfordwest Castle.  This was the Arches' first league game back in the top division and the players were determined to get their league campaign off to a winning start. The game was played in terrible conditions with a strong wind together with heavy rain making accurate bowling difficult for both sides. However it was the Arches' players who finished the game stronger to bag the win, picking up twelve points to the Castle's two. This was a tremendous team performance from the Arches, with everyone playing their hearts out to obtain the win.

On rink one, the Captains rink, skipped by Ashley, found themselves drawn against Barry Absalom and his men. With Barry having a fine game together with some luck thrown in, he steered his rink to victory by 22 shots to 11. Rink 2 saw Gerald and his men up against Gareth Jones and his crew. This game turned out to be a cracker, with the two Steve's and John all playing well. By the 17th end with the Castle rink picking up four shots, the Arches found themselves adrift by 20 shots to 18. The last four ends turned into a personal duel between the two skips with Gerald coming out on top with lovely weighted bowls on a sodden green to draw shot on the last four ends to see his rink home by 22 shots to 20. Well done G man.

On rink four Dai and his men ended as top rink for the Arches. Up against Dave Summers they cruised to a 23 shots to 11 win. With the two Lewis boys, Kevin and Thomas, laying the foundation, Ken and Dai had a stress free afternoon adding to the shot count. The biggest concern they had was trying to keep themselves dry - well done the commandos !  Rink 5 saw Tiger and the cubs back in action against Roger Price and his men. This was another close game which went to the final end. Although picking up a six on the fourth end and a five on the 15th, the cubs found themselves two shots adrift playing the final end. The whole rink then bowled a superb end to pick up three shots to win the game 23-22 - well done the cubs.

FIVE ARCHES 117 (14 pts) PEMBROKE DOCK PATER 46 (0)

Tony PowlingOn a beautiful day for bowling, on a superb green prepared by Paul Diment, the Arches clinched the second division title with a powerful performance on Sunday.
With all four rinks winning their games, the Arches gained a 14 points to nil victory, with a shot count of 117 to 46 for the Pater team.
This win brought the curtain down on what has been a magnificent league campaign for the Five Arches squad. Every player who has represented the team has played a part in the success.

First off were Dai and Ken playing on their favourite rink two. With Ben Cloake and Kevin Lewis in top form, the rink cruised to a 32 shots to nine win.
Next off were Tiger and the Cubs with an 18-12 win over Pater captain Steve James. This was a much closer game, as Steve, who had a cracking game, kept changing the head with saving bowls when the Cubs were holding numerous counts. The Cubs then made sure of the points by picking up 11 shots over the last six ends - well done John, Steve, Clive and Ray.

Rink four saw Ashley’s crew once again top rink, with a 36 shots to eight win over Martin Hyde and his men. With Cameron White having a superb game up front, Jonno, Tony and Ashley had a stress-free afternoon, building up the shot count. This win saw Ashley maintain his unbeaten league record.
On rink one, Gerald and his men were going to be last off. With Ron, Jim and Peter all bowling well, Gerald stepped on the mat with his last bowl to deliver the coup de grace, and ensure a 31 shots to 17 win over skip Steve John and his rink.

The Arches players would like to thank all the ladies who looked after us with our teas, all our supporters and the youngsters who stepped in to play for us when we needed them, namely the three Bens, Cameron and Luke.
