Pembroke Dock Mariners v Five Arches

Five ArchesPEMBROKE DOCK MARINERS 74.75 (2 pts)  FIVE ARCHES 94 (12)

Another beautiful day for bowling, another fine win for the Arches, who picked up another 12 points by winning on three rinks, with one going down. This win saw the Arches maintain their unbeaten start to their league campaign. Rink one saw Gerald and his men always in control against Gerard Thomas and his rink. With Gouldie making his season’s debut and Bill up front, backed up by Clive and Gerald, they won 28 shots to 14.

Tiger and his cubs found  rink two to their liking and were once again on the prowl for shots. At the tea break, the match was all-square, eights shots each. However, on the 17th end they picked up a seven to go 21-11 up, and by winning three of the next four ends, they ran out winners by 24 shots to 14. On rink three, Dai and his crew of Jim, Kevin and Ken had a real battle on their hands against Dave Hallwood and his men. After picking up two shots on the first end, they lost the next three, conceding 11 shots. From then on it was an uphill struggle, and with Hallwood constantly driving into the head to take out the Arches’ bowls, the Mariners ran out winners 30 shots to 18.

On rink four, the Mariners rnk, led by team captain John Arman, found themselves a player short, which meant they had to lose a quarter of their total shots. Up against them was an Arches rink skipped by Ashley, along with Joe, Jonno and captain Tony. With both teams winning their share of ends, a strong finish from the Arches quartet saw them home as they picked up eight shots in the last four ends to eventually win by 24 shots to twelve-and-threequarters.

Rink scores (Five Arches first, Mariners skips only):

Mike Gouldingay, Bill Benham, Clive Webb, Gerald Hewitt 28; Gerard Thomas 14.

John Rees, Harold Ebdon, Steve Davies, Ray Taylor 24; Graham Bann 13.

Jim Taylor, Kevin Lewis, Ken Lloyd, Dai Spencer 18; Dave Hallwood 30.

Joe Hewitt, Jonathan Hubbard, Tony Powling, Ashley Hooper 24; John Arman 12.75.

Well done Arches, another solid performance.

Next game is tomorrow (Saturday) when St. Issell’s are the visitors to the Sutton Street green.

Tenby v Cowbridge

TENBY BC 194 COWBRIDGE BC 99

Last weekend was a perfect one for bowls. The weather was absolutely beautiful, with sunshine all the way (has summer come at last?), and with both men’s teams winning on Saturday, the icing on the cake came on Sunday  with a friendly of six mixed rinks against visiting Cowbridge Bowling Club. It turned out to be a lovely afternoon, with plenty of laughter. Many thanks to Pendine for putting out a rink for us and it was also nice to see Ray Holly supporting again.Although the score looked a little one-sided, it was nice to see  one of the Cowbridge rinks getting a ‘hot shot’.

St Katherines v Five Arches

Five ArchesFIVE ARCHES 95 (9 pts) ST. KATHERINES 75 (5 pts)

On a beautiful sunny day, the Arches travelled to Milford to take on the Kats. In what turned out to be a very tough encounter, the Arches maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a narrow win, picking up nine points to the Kats’ five. With four regulars missing, this was a fine performance by the Arches and thanks go to Fred for helping out at short notice.

Rink two: Ken and his men had a very tough game against a very strong Kats rink. Leading seven shots to four, they unfortunately dropped a seven, when the Kats’ third trailed the jack to go into the lead by 11 shots to seven. Ken’s rink then responded well by picking up nine shots in the next four ends to lead by two. From then on it was all downhill, as the Kats’ four won the next nine ends, picking up 15 shots.

Rink three: Gerald and his rink started well, leading 12 shots to three on the eighth end. They then lost the next four ends, conceding seven shots, cutting their lead to two. By the 16th end, the Arches rink were still leading by one, and on the 18th picked up a three to lead 19-16. However, a strong finish from the Kats’ four saw Gerald’s men lose 21-19. Rink four: Once again Tiger and his cubs were in hunting mode for shots, and they certainly delivered, gaining a massive win by 41 shots to six, winning 16 of the 21 ends. This big win ensured the win for the Arches team.

Rink five: Another tight match was being played out on this rink. After six ends,  Ashley and his men were seven-one down, but picking up seven shots over the next three meant the Arches rink were only one shot adrift at the tea-break. By the 17th end, after picking up a four-shot count, Ashley’s men were leading 16 shots to 14. The Kats would not lie down, though, and in the next two ends picked up four shots. On the last end, with the Arches holding shot, the opposing skip played a fine drawing shot to see the game end in an honourable draw, 19 shots apiece.

Rink scores (Five Arches first, St. Katherines skips only) were as follows.

Jim Taylor, Kevin Lewis, Harold Ebdon, Ken Lloyd 16; J. Leavy 29.
Ben Sheldon, Fred Broomhead, Tony Powling, Gerald Hewitt 19; K. Walker 21.
John Rees, Harry Meads, Steve Davies, Ray Taylor 41; D. Hastings 6
.Joe Hewitt, Bill Benham, Jonathan Hubbard, Ashley Hooper 19; D. Harries 19.

The Arches have another tough game on their hands this Sunday when they travel to Fishguard.
