Last Saturday the Layton and Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby side travelled to Llandridnod Wells for a Quarter Final match in the Carruthers Shield.  Captain Jon Webb and his team knew this was going to be a tough test, and with the opposition on their own turf it was always going to be a close encounter.On the show rink were Cameron White, John Baggott, Pat Currie and skip Paul Diment. Matched up against legendary Llandod skip Ken Price, this was always going to be a test for the Tenby four. The opposition got off to an early lead, but Paul and his men are made of sterner stuff and soon adapted to the pace of the green and cruised to a very impressive 5 shot victory.

Next up was Luke Rees, Aaron Lloyd, Peter Day and Andrew Muskett. This contest was close throughout with the lead switching practically every end, the Tenby foursome kept it as tight as they could, but were just edged out by 2 shots. Dai Spencer, Jon Webb, Mike Jackson and John Roberts were always in control in their encounter. With skip John in scintillating form the Tenby men blasted away their opposition by 18 shots. Neil Dickinson, Joe Richards, Luke and Craig Guymer had a battle royale on their rink. 11 shots in arrears at the halfway stage, the Tenby lads dug in, and at the end reduced the deficit to a match saving 3 shots.

A fabulous 18 shot win now puts the Tenby team into the semi-finals and another trip to Llandod to face RTB, this is the third time in four years that the team has made it to the finals at the home of Welsh Bowls. A very happy bus returned to Tenby late that night, but the good performances did not stop on the Bowling green. John “the Silencer” Roberts wowed the crowd with his vocal skills, and as it was Olympic fortnight, Pat Currie even entertained everyone with a very polished Gymnastic routine.

County Finals 2012

County bowls finals writes Ceris Hewlings...

A large crowd of supporters enjoyed a high standard of bowling at the annual Pembroke County Bowling Association finals on Saturday. Hosted by Whitland Bowling Club, home club of association president Colin Wynn, a total of 12 games were played throughout the day, which even saw the sun make a welcome appearance! Peter Day, of Tenby, won the blue riband singles event, a feat he previously achieved in 2010, beating the holder Craig Jones, of Haverfordwest. Staring defeat in the face, a last bowl of the match super bowl by Chris Court, of Haverfordwest, saw he and partner Ryan Thomas clinch the pairs title over Jon Webb and Pat Currie, of Tenby, in an extra end thriller, while John Roberts, also of Tenby, now has his name on every open county competition trophy after winning the triples with Mike Jackson and last year’s president John Baggott.

Tenby’s Paul Diment lifted the rinks trophy for an amazing eighth time - this time with Peter Day and twins Luke and Craig Guymer, while new names on the prize-winners list included their teenage clubmates Ben Cloake, who lifted the Under 18s cup, and Aaron Lloyd, who won both the U25s and U35s trophies. In the Over 60s competitions, Mal Evans, of Pendine, successfully defended his title, the pairs went to Brian McKehon and Stuart Howe, of Saundersfoot, who defeated the holders John Baggott and Pat Currie, while the rinks stays in Pembroke Dock with 2011 winners Tudor Harries, Brian Dowling, Ken Edwards and Richard Jones. At the fourth time of asking, Ysie White was finally successful in the mixed pairs final. This year with Jon Webb, they defeated the host club’s mother and son duo, Kathy and Dan Jenner, previous winners in 2009.

With the exception of the Under 35 singles and mixed pairs, all winners will now represent Pembrokeshire during the national finals week in Llandrindod Wells in August.

Blue skies in Tenby for the Friday night clash with Pembroke Dock and ultimately very blue feelings for the Five Arches team at the end of the game.  Pembroke Dock were looking for revenge after our fortunate 8 points to 6 win on  their home patch earlier on in the season and Five Arches were trying to stop a sequence of 7 defeats in a row.  On rink 2 the game started brightly for the home team, Clive ably assisted by Harold, John and Mike picked up 3 shots on the first end and continued their recent run of good form. Leading by 14 shots to 7 at tea, they hung on despite a spirited fight back by the Pembroke Dock quartet to win by 22 shots to 20. However this was the highpoint of the night for the Arches, the remaining 3 rinks suffered as the Pembroke Dock boys exacted full revenge.

On tricky rink 3 , young Ben and his experienced trio of Ken, Tony and Peter gained shots on the first 2 ends but then didn't score for the next nine. Trailing by 14 shots to 2 at tea, they fought back but couldn't match the powerful  Dock rink and lost by 30 shots to 11. Ray, Tony, Joe and John were struggling from the start against another strong rink. With 10 ends played they were down by 18 shots to 4. The Pembroke Dock foursome were relentless and picked up shots on 8 of the remaining 11 ends to run out handsome winners by 34 shots to 9.  To complete a trio of big wins for the opposition, Ashley with Ben, Harry and Steve matched their opponents for the first 7 ends to be level at 4 shots apiece. However the wheels  then completely fell off, down by 18 shots to 5 after 13 ends and eventually  a very comfortable 28 shots to 9 win for the away team.  Not the result we were hoping for but we should not be too disappointed , Pembroke Dock are a very fine team. Next game Saturday 28th July away to Pendine.

Tuesday, 17th July

The ladies (sponsored by The Fourcroft Hotel) travelled away to  Pembroke Dock. Rink 5 saw the Tenby side down11-3 but they managed a good second half to finish 16-14 up. Rink 6 saw the two teams 10 all at tea but Pembroke Dock pulled away to win.
