Pembroke Dock v Five Arches

Five ArchesPembroke Dock 73  Five Arches 74

After a couple of weeks off, the Five Arches resumed their First Division season with an away trip to Pembroke Dock. We were hoping to build on our good start to the season but Pembroke Dock is a hard place to get any sort of result so we were realistic in our expectations. Ashley with Ken, Tony and Mike had a great game against opposing captain Richard on rink 1. The game was tied 8 shots all after 10 ends and 17 all after 17 ends but a good finish from the Pembroke Dock quartet allowed them to edge away to win by 24 shots to 17. Rink 2 saw Clive and his rink of Joe, John and Harold hoping to add to their unbeaten start to the season. However they were drawn against Pembroke Dock legend Les Davies  so it was not going to be easy. The home rink had a narrow lead of 9 shots to 5 after 10 ends, by the 16th the score had advanced to 16 shots to 11 in Pembroke Dock's favour. Another strong finish by Les and his team  increased their lead and they  finished winners by 24 shots to 12.

Bucking the trend on rink 3 were Ray and his rink of Ben, Steve and John. Leading by 14 shots to 3 after 10 ends, they continued in a similar vein after the break to run out comfortable winners by 31 shots to 4. This was a very fine performance dropping shots on only 4 ends is remarkable. Ray and his team had given the Five Arches a chance to snatch victory and Tony and his rink of Stuart, Jim and Peter responded well to this challenge. It was looking bleak after 18 ends , 21 shots to 8 down but a well-timed finish,  picking up 6 shots in the remaining 3 ends including a very important 3 on the last , gave the Five Arches an overall win by the smallest of margins of 74 shots to 73. Another good performance from the whole team. An interesting game next , against reigning champions Tenby.

Carruthers - Tenby v Milford Haven

TENBY 120 v MILFORD HAVEN 43

Tenby v Milford Haven 2012The Layton and Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby side were in action in their first Carruthers Group match last Saturday.  The visitors to Sutton Street were Milford Haven, who were arriving on the back of 2 dissapointing League defeats, so were more than eager to capture their first win of the season. Rink 1 consisted of Cameron White, John Baggott, John Webb and skip Paul Diment. The Tenby foursome raced into an early lead, with their opponents only scoring 1 shot throughout all of the first half of the contest. The Milford rink fared a little better in the second half but Paul and his men kept their concentration to end up 14 shot victors.

Luke Rees, Peter Hooper, Peter Day and Andrew Muskett were drawn on Rink 2. The Tenby rink had a very good day at the office with Peter Hooper in outstanding form. The opponents only managed to score on 5 of the 21 ends, resulting in an impressive 27 shot win for the home rink. Neil Dickinson, Ashley Hooper, Luke and Craig Guymer had to battle hard in the early stages of their contest.  9-6 down at half time, the Tenby boy’s then upped their game in the latter stages, running out 14 shot winners. John Rees, Dai Spencer, Mike Jackson and John Roberts had a very comfortable afternoon on rink 4. Racing into a 9 shot lead the home rink always had control throughout, finishing up 22 shots to the good.

Captain John Webb was delighted with the effort and application as Tenby notched up their first win of the group stages of the Carruthers, putting them top with 2 matches remaining. Tomorrow the team travel to Fishguard for their next Carruthers group match.

Castle v Five Arches

Five ArchesCastle 87  v Five Arches 65

The Five Arches started their campaign in the First Division with an away trip to Haverfordwest to play Castle. We were hoping for a good start to the new season and with the weather being kind we started in good spirits.

Ashley and his rink of Ken and uncle and nephew combination of Tony and Joe struggled out on rink 3. Up against a strong Castle rink, they only managed to collect 2 shots by tea to trail by a massive 20 shots. A more even second half followed with the Five Arches quartet at least getting into double figures however they finished well behind by 34 shots to 10. Tony playing with Jim, Peter and Stuart had a much closer game. After ten ends the score was 7 shots to 5 to the Castle foursome. This lead was increased to 14 shots to 9 at the 17th end but then the Five Arches rallied picking up two 3's and a single to win three out of the remaining four ends to clinch victory by one shot. Special mention must go to Tony's final bowl which moved the jack back to make the three shots required to win.

Clive, Harold, John and Ray were involved in another thriller. They started well on a tricky green and were leading by  14 shots to 8 after 10 ends. The game got closer and closer and the Castle team had levelled the game after 19 ends. Reluctant skip Clive then showed true skip qualities by playing telling bowls in the last 2 ends to gain shots and run out winners by 22 shots to 20. Finally to complete a trio of tight games, Ray aided and abetted by John, Steve and vice-captain Ben were involved in another tight tussle. 11 shots to 8 down after 10 ends, they couldn't quite get back into the lead, narrowing the gap to one shot on a couple of occasions but trailed by 4 going into the last end.  Fine bowling by all four let them pick up three shots to fall short by only one.

A very satisfactory start to the season, picking up a couple of rinks away from home in our first game in the First Division was a fine performance. We can now look forward to our first game at home on Sunday against Pendine.
