Five Arches v Castle

Five ArchesFive Arches 68 v Castle 91

An unusual Friday night game for the Five Arches and also an important one. After a series of defeats, it was imperative that we got back to winning ways. However Castle are also embroiled in the relegation dogfight so both teams were "well up" for this match.  The game started in sunshine another unusual occurrence this summer and on rink 2, vice-captain Ben and his rink  of John , Tony and Peter also started brightly opening up a 6 shots to 1 lead after 4 ends. By tea the game was delicately poised, the Five Arches leading by 9 shots to 7. The Castle foursome responded and gained the lead with a series of 7 shots in 3 ends, they held on to this advantage and ran out winners by 20 shots to 14.   Tony and his rink of Ben, Joe and Ken had almost the worst start possible, dropping 7 shots on the first end. They fought back to be only 16 shots to 7 down at tea but could not close the 7 shot gap and ended up losing by 22 shots to 15.

Rink 4 saw Ashley and a new combination of Steve, Harry and Five Arches debutant Howard involved in a game of two halves. The first half completely belonged to the Castle quartet, at one stage leading by 20 shots to 6. However inspired bowling by the Five Arches players especially Howard saw them gain 18 shots in 6 ends and then hold on to win by 27 shots to 23. Clive and his rink of Mike, Johno and Ray were up against it on rink 5, playing a strong Castle team, they played well to be only 2 down after 7 ends but Castle went up another gear and piled on the shots eventually winning by 26 shots to 12. Ultimately another disappointing game for the Five Arches gaining only 2 points however there are six games to go and we definitely have a good performance or two ready and waiting.   Next game Friday tonight, home to Pembroke Dock.

Rink 3 saw the away side 13-6 up at teatime and they went on to finish 27-10 up. Rink 4 saw the home team in the lead at teatime and they finished the match the winners.

Saundersfoot v Five Arches

Five ArchesSaundersfoot  89  v  Five Arches 65.25

A Wednesday night meeting with local rivals Saundersfoot is always tough encounter. After the defeat to Milford, we needed to hit back and gain some points. The match started in some confusion as one of the Five Arches players  failed to arrive and the rinks had to be rejigged.  The Saundersfoot players showed admirable patience and we finally started.  On rink 2, Tony and his rink of John, Joe and Ken were hoping to continue their winning ways from the previous Saturday. They started well and led by 8 shots to 5 after 10 ends. In an evenly matched game, the loss of 2 fours on the 17th and 18th ends proved conclusive as the Saundersfoot foursome held on to win by 20 shots to 18. Harold well supported by Harry, Tony and Steve were on top form. They led by 11 shots to 10 at half time, winning 6 of the next 7 ends, they opened up a 6 shot lead. The Saundersfoot players hit back but just fell short and Harold and his boys held on to win by one shot.

With one player missing, we had to play with one triple. It fell to Peter, Ashley and Ben to try and battle it out against Myrddin and his rink. The game started well  for the Five Arches triple picking up a six on the 5th end, however Saundersfoot hit back and led by 11 shots to 9 after ten ends. In a tightly fought match the game flowed and ebbed and eventually with  the 25% reduction for playing in a triple the Saundersfoot quartet prevailed  by 20 shots to 17.25. On Rink 5 , Ray skipping Mike , Stuart and John were up against the in form Joe Dennis. They struggled from the start and trailed 13 shots to 6 after 10 ends. The Saundersfoot rink piled on the pressure in the second half, pulling away to win by 28 shots to 8.  On the positive side we picked up another two points but we need to get back to winning ways if we are to remain in the First Division. Next game is tonight against Castle.

Five Arches v Milford Haven

Ben SheldonFive Arches 71  v Milford Haven 81

An important game for the Five Arches against one of the teams below us in the table. A good result against Milford would go a long way to keeping us in the division. However things do noBen Simmons, Joe Hewitt, John Reest always go to plan. On rink 2 Ashley and his rink of Stuart, Harry and Tony were up against experienced skip Roy Thomas and were comprehensively put to the sword. Trailing by 17 shots to  4 at tea , the Five Arches quartet rallied in the 2nd half to win 7 of the remaining 11 ends but still suffered a 28 shots to 14 defeat. Harold , skipping for the first time this season, ably supported by Mike, Jim and Johno started well and led by 11 shots to 8 at tea. However a fight back from Gareth and his rink in the second half gave them a 24 shots to 14 victory.

Our most successful skip  Ray and his rink of Ben, Ben and Steve suffered a rare defeat. In a topsy turvy game, they trailed by 13 shots to 3 after 12 ends but fought back to be one shot behind after 17.  The Milford foursome rallied and held on to win by 19 shots to 17.  Tony with his new rink of John, Joe and Ken were the bright spot of the afternoon. They were always in control, leading by 11 shots to 4 at tea they continued in a similar vein to win by 24 shots to 10.  A disappointing result for the Five Arches, losing at home. However  with eight games to go there is still time to recover from this defeat and try and remain in the first division.

Tenby v Guest Memorial

Joe Pat and NeilTENBY 81 v  GUEST MEMORIAL 76

The Layton and Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby side were involved in the first of the Knock out stages of the Carruthers last Saturday. Visitors to the Sutton Street green were a Merthyr based side named Guest Memorial, who were accompanied by a busload of supporters, who were certainly up for the challenge ahead.  Conditions for the second week running unfortunately were once again very detrimental to good Bowling.Rink 1 consisted of Luke Rees, Ashley Hooper, Peter Day and Andrew Muskett. The Tenby four got off to a slow start, only scoring once on the first 6 ends, try as they might they could not get back into the contest and lost out to a disappointing 9 shot defeat.

Neil Dickinson, Joe Richards, Pat Currie and Craig Guymer were on Rink 2. This was a topsy turvy contest with Craig and his men racing into early lead only to be pegged back at the hJB and Cameronalfway stage. The opposition then pulled away, but the Tenby rink dug in and managed to claw their way back into the match ending up with an honourable draw. Top rink of the Day was Cameron White, John Baggott, Luke Guymer and Paul Diment.  The Tenby lads pushed hard throughout the match with Skip Paul leading by example, with some outstanding bowling. A 10 shot winning margin was the final outcome.

Dai Spencer, Jon Webb, Mike Jackson and John Roberts were drawn on Rink 4. This was a close battle from the off, it was all square at the halfway point, but JR and his men took the initiative in the second half running out 4 shot winners. So a closely fought 5 shot  win was the outcome of the match, with what was a somewhat lacklustre performance from the Tenby team, the overall feeling was that they had just managed to “get out of Jail” and would need to up their game for the next round. Credit must be given to Guest who treated this as their cup final and were even 47-44 up at the halfway point, but the Tenby lads just had enough to turn the game in their favour.  The next Carruthers match will be another home tie against a strong Aberystwyth side in a fortnight’s time.
