County Finals 2014

Tenby bowlers sweep the board at county finals
12 July 2014

Tenby Bowling Club swept the board at the Pembroke County Bowls Association finals on Saturday. Held at Fishguard and Goodwick Bowling Club, the home of this year's president, Alan Newberry, for the first time ever, the blue and white army won all the main trophies to qualify for the national finals week next month in Llandrindod Wells. Six and two were certainly Tenby's lucky numbers - six titles, a sixth triples victory for Peter Day and sixth win in the rinks for John Roberts, while it was two trophies each for Paul Diment, John and Cameron White (singles and triples, rink and pairs, Under 18 singles and Under 25 singles, respectively). In fact, Peter's sixth triples means that he is all-time record winner in this discipline, now leading former Welsh triples winner, Andrew Muskett,. who is sat on five.

John Roberts is third in the all-time rinks winner behind Peter Howells, of Haverfordwest
(seven), and Paul Diment (eight). Paul's second singles title matches that of his grandfather, the late Bob Diment. In fact, Paul's singles title came 12 years after his first (2002 and 2014) - the same time 'delay' as Bob's! (1954 and 1966). As well as winning his second singles title and a second title in the triples later in the day, Paul also reduced his opponent to a mere two shots in the final. so two was certainly Paul's lucky number for the day! John's pairs partner was Mike Jackson, with the duo winning their second pairs title together and John's third (Peter Howells, of Haverfordwest, holds the record of six titles), while the duo were joined by Joe Richards (recording his first county win) and Ryan Thomas in the rinks (second win), while Paul (three triples titles) and Peter were joined by Ryan to clinch the triples. The day's other winners were Roger Price, Haverfordwest who claimed the Over 60 singles for the first time as he was joined by first time winners, Stewart King Thomas and Mal Evans, Pendine (Over 60 pairs), Stewart and David King Thomas, Mal Evans and Mal Dix, Pendine, won the Over 60 rinks for a second time, Gareth Barrett, Haverfordwest (Under 35 singles fora second time) and Marion Evans and Steve Dick, Saundersfoot (mixed pairs) for the first time.

Full results were as follows:

Carruthers Update

ND ToyCARRUTHERS QUEST
5 July 2014

Tenby continued their Carruthers Shield quest with another narrow victory on Saturday. Journeying to Six Bells Bowling Club at Abertillery, they found themselves over 20 shots behind at the halfway mark, but rallied in the second part of the match to eventually sneak home by three (73-70) -one less than in their previous encounter against St. Josephs of Cardiff. They now have another difficult task on their hands when they again travel into the Valleys next week to take on Blaenrhondda in the third round of the competition, their opponents having accounted for another Pembrokeshire side, Haverfordwest, in the last round.

Five Arches v Whitland

Five ArchesFIVE ARCHES 70 (2 pts) WHITLAND 92 (12)
5 July 2014

Last Saturday, the visitors to Sutton Street were Whitland Bowling Club to play their First Division league fixture against the Five Arches team. The Arches were expecting this to be a very tough game, and so it turned out, with Whitland winning on three rinks to bag 12 points to the Arches' two points, thanks to Steve Williams's rink who saw off the challenge of the Whitland captain's rink by 24 shots to 16. Although defeated by an overall shot count of 22 shots, this was a much-improved per-formance by the Arches who have been in a poor run of form in recent games. With the selectors making several positional changes across the rinks, the team responded with three rinks very much in with a chance of winning their games. Gerald's rink, on rink one, were in a real battle with the Steve Rees four. By the 14th end there was only one shot separating the teams, but the Whitland four finished the stronger, picking up nine shots to the Arches' three, which saw them victors by 20 shots to 13. On rink two, the Steve Williams four had a fine win against Glyndwr Thomas and his men At the 14th end, the Whitland rink were leading by 11 shots to 10, but from then on the Arches four went into over-drive, picking up 14 shots to Whitland's five, to bag two much-needed points. Rink four saw Jonno, skip-ping for the first time this sea-son, up against Liam Price and his men. Although Alex Watt was back from the North Sea oil rigs to don his Arches shin, the home rink found them-selves struggling to get into the game. as Liam Price, in great form, steered his rink to a 33 shots to 11 win, Ashley and his rink were drawn against Colin Wynn and his crew on rink five. This was a game the Arches four let get away from them. Well in the game at 10 ends, they ended up losing by one shot, 23 to 22 shots.

Rink scores (Arches first. Whitland skips only):
Gerald Hewitt, Neil Dickinson, Steve Davies and John Rees 13; Steve Rees 20.
Steve Williams, Tony Powling, Kevin Lewis and Roger Thomas 24; Glyndwr Thomas 16.
John Hubbard, Alex Watt. Steve Sheldon and Harold Ebdon 11; Liam Price 33.
Ashley Hooper, Dai Spencer, Ben Cloake and Ken Lloyd 22; Colin Wynn 23.

Tenby Arches Ladies v Rhiwbina Ladies

29 June 2014

Tenby Arches Ladies played host to Rhiwbina  Ladies last Sunday. The Rhiwbina ladies had been touring Pembrokeshire and were playing their last game at Tenby before heading back to Cardiff. The Tenby ladies lost the game by 57 shots to 73, but the score really did not matter, friendships were formed and it was the game of bowls where young and “not so old' can compete equally that was the winner. A great time was had by all and a special thank you goes out from captain Carol to Katie Dickinson and Lillian Howells.

Haverfordwest Tasker Ladies v Tenby Arches Ladies

28 June 2014

With the disappointment of their last game defeat behind them, the Tenby Arches ladies travelled to Haverfordwest on Saturday hoping for a win to boost their confidence. They certainly did this, beating both Haverfordwest Tasker rinks and picking up the maximum six points. Helen and her rink of Meryl, Audrey and Gerry were in fine form, winning by 27 shots to 17 and were never behind in the game. Alison. minus her Aussie hat on this occasion, was supported by Liz, Ginnie and Mair. Like Helen, on the rink along-side her, the girls were never behind, running out comfort-able winners by 27 shots to 14, This was a great confidence boosting win, to get maximum points and to win by 54 shots to 37 at Haverfordwest must go down as one of the best performances of the season?
